*Participants should also bring their own laptop to access course materials, which will be provided electronically in advance.

Course Description

This hands-on course focuses on the commissioning, operations, and maintenance of interactive residential and commercial-scale solar PV projects less than 1 MW. Day 1 will be spent in the classroom and Day 2 will include both classroom time and hands-on practice with commissioning, operations and maintenance tasks with a solar array. Note: This course does not cover off-grid systems.

The course price includes lunch on both days. (Please email courses@solaralberta.ca at the time of registration if you have dietary restrictions or allergies.)

Course participants are required to bring their own PPE, including work shoes/boots, safety glasses, and gloves. Participants without PPE will not be able to participate in the hands-on activities on Day 2 of the course.

This course is intended for electricians, technicians, engineers, solar installers, and those with a good understanding of electrical theory and electrical terminology.

Prerequisites/required knowledge

This course has no prerequisites. However, it is assumed that participants have a good understanding of electrical theory and electrical terminology. 

Participants are encouraged to have a current copy of the Canadian or Alberta Electrical Code, although it is not required.

Certification

Upon successful completion of this course and with a minimum score of 70% on the course quiz, you will receive a course completion certificate from Solar Alberta.

INSTRUCTOR

Eric Smiley, MASc, has worked as a professional engineer in the province of BC, and has more than 30 years of experience designing and installing renewable energy systems. He is a member of Viridian Energy Co-operative, an electrical contracting company and workers’ co-op based on Vancouver Island that is focused on renewable energy systems. He is the Design Manager for the co-operative.

Mr. Smiley’s previous experience includes operating his own engineering firm on Vancouver Island, working as a project leader in applied research at BCIT, and instructing as a professor at Vancouver Island University. He is a member of the Section 64 Sub-committee of the Canadian Electrical Code and regularly delivers workshops and training to electricians, technologists and engineers on the topics of design, installation, and operation of renewable energy systems.
